1957 Rolex GMT-Master 6542 Radium Tropical Brown Dial Bakelite Bezel
the Rolex GMT-Master 6542
The Rolex GMT-Master 6542 is a true icon in the world of horology, representing one of the most historically significant timepieces ever created. Introduced in the early 1950’s, it was Rolex’s first GMT watch, designed in collaboration with Pan American World Airways to help pilots keep track of multiple time zones during long-haul flights. Known for its innovative features, the 6542 was originally equipped with a fragile yet visually striking bakelite bezel insert and a sleek, gilt dial that exuded luxury and functionality. Over the decades, the GMT-Master 6542 has become a highly sought-after collector’s piece, celebrated for its rarity, craftsmanship, and historical significance.
This particular example of the Rolex GMT-Master 6542 is one of the rarest early variants of the iconic model. The original bakelite bezel insert, which was known for its high radiation levels due to radium, has been replaced with a safer tritium bakelite insert while preserving the charm of the original design. The bakelite insert remains intact, though it has a crack at the 22, common occurrence in bezels of this age.
The case is remarkably well-preserved, with its thick profile, crisp edges, and factory finishes still intact. Importantly, it is free of any laser restoration or added material, showing only normal wear. The serial and model numbers remain clearly visible on the case, affirming its authenticity and originality.
The watch retains its original undated Rolex bracelet with 80 end links, which is in good condition. The dial is exceptionally well-preserved, free of any touch-ups, with all the gilt writing fully intact. Over time, the dial has aged to a stunning dark brown tropical hue, adding a unique character to the watch. The radium lume is still fully intact, a rarity for a piece of this age.
The original hands, all of which are radium-filled, are another highlight of this watch. They include the rare big bubble white second hand, long minute hand, and the highly desirable early long GMT hand that extends beyond the chapter ring. Our extensive research revealed that only two known examples with this correct hand configuration exist, making this an exceedingly rare find.
The original movement has been recently serviced, ensuring it operates flawlessly.
This watch comes with our in-house certificate, further affirming its authenticity and condition.
For collectors seeking a historically significant, highly original, and beautifully aged Rolex GMT-Master 6542, this timepiece offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Its honest condition, rare features, and tropical dial make it a centerpiece for any serious collection.
