Historical Provenance
John A. Davis served in the U.S. Air Force during the 1940s and 1950s as a pilot and later as a Master Sergeant with the Military Airlift Command. The watch is accompanied by his original Air Force flight suit, embroidered with his name and the 5,000 Flight Hours badge, along with his military ID card, name tags, ribbons, wings, and a remarkable collection of medals. Also included are several photographs of Davis with his flight crew. one showing him proudly wearing this very Rolex on his wrist.
The Watch!
This Rolex Oyster Royalite reference 4220 was produced in 1942 and remains in exceptional original condition. Never seen in this condition. The stainless steel 30mm case has never been polished and retains its crisp contours and beautiful vintage character. The case back is personally engraved with his initials “J.A.D.”, a subtle and meaningful mark that ties the watch directly to its owner. It is fitted with its original Rolex expandable bracelet, stamped 1957, and still features the original domed crystal.
The Untouched Pilot Dial:
A stunning example of Rolex’s wartime artistry, the dial is a multi-tone “Pilot dial” with a soft cream and silver two-tone surface. It features bold luminous Arabic numerals with an inner red 24-hour track and a finely printed outer minute scale. The numerals and hands retain their aged luminous material, now a warm golden hue that contrasts beautifully with the aged dial tones. The original blued-steel seconds hand adds a perfect accent of color, enhancing the overall vintage charm. The dial has aged gracefully with light patina, giving it a distinct depth and warmth that can only come from time.
Movement:
Inside ticks the Rolex caliber 59, a robust and precise manual-wind movement from Rolex’s wartime production era. The movement has been fully overhauled and serviced by our workshop, ensuring reliable performance while preserving complete originality. The case back interior bears the correct Rolex signatures Brevette Rolex S.A. Genève Suisse Haute Précision.
